Shade Trees
Shade trees are sure to add beauty to your yard as well as offer some respite from Florida’s heat during the summer months. And placed correctly, you’ll also get some benefit to your electric bill.
Likely the most recognizable shade tree of all is the stately Live Oak. Others (though not an exhaustive list) include the Red Maple, Bald Cypress, Slash Pine and Sycamore. The Black Olive “Shady Lady” is also popular. And though flowering, the Magnolia is a favored tree for shade as well. See the Magnolia as well as other flowering trees that offer great shade!
Though Palms also offer shade, trees with heavy foliage will maximize coverage. However, we are in Florida and nothing says “Sunshine State” more than palms. Don’t forget them!
If your yard is small, you will prefer options with rounded or oval canopies. For larger yards, trees with spreading canopies offer maximum shade.
