Agave

blue glow agave

Also known as the Century Plant, there are over 200 species of Agave (Agave Americana).

These drought-resistant succulents are ideal for southwestern Florida’s subtropical climate. And being low-maintenance, they are loved by gardeners. Caution is advised, however, as the sharp spines on the end of the leaves can be dangerous to people and pets.

The typical Agave can reach 20′ with a spread of up to 12′. Given their size and dangerous spines, they should be planted at least 6′ away from walkways and other areas common to pedestrian traffic. Agaves typically flower anywhere between eight and 30 years

For smaller areas (or safety reasons), consider a spineless species. These are typically limited to 2-3′ in height with a spread of 3-6′.
