Vines

If you have a fence, trellis or other barrier for which you would like to cover, vines are an ideal choice. Denser foliage can offer privacy and the blooms will bring color most often in summer or winter. The also grow well on arbors, lattices, pergolas, carport support structures and even a lamp post. Many will attract butterflies.

As they are typically fast growers, you’ll want to train them properly to control growth. For “twining” vines, you’ll want to weave the newer vines through the support structure. For “clinging” vines, pinch off new shoots for more branching and fuller growth.

In addition to those shown below, the Bougainvillea is also considered a vine (as well as flowering trees and shrubs). Though not exhaustive, others include Trumpet Honeysuckle, Climbing Aster, Virginia Creeper, Littlebell and Rubber Vine.
